The regional chapter of the global Women of the Caribbean in AI Governance convened its first meeting virtually on March 26, 2025. There were 30 participants at this first meeting.
The chapter clarified its aims, which are to identify include and amplify the voices of Caribbean Women in AI governance, support the development of ethical and regionally relevant AI frameworks, influencing national and intergovernmental AI policy and raise citizen awareness and promote digital literacy.

Samantha Simms

Regional chapter chair Samantha Simms noted the need for stronger Caribbean representation in global AI governance, noting that while the region might be small, it has an outsized cultural capital and contributions to innovation.

Jeehan Miller, chair of Women of Jamaica in AI Governance, noted some progress in AI initiatives in the region.
Among them, the work of the UNESCO Caribbean Telecommunications Union AI Working Group, the establishment of a Caribbean AI Policy Roadmap, an AI for SIDs 2.0 Caribbean AI Forum, Jamaica’s National AI Policy Recommendations, the Caribbean Court of Justice’s guidance on generative AI in legal practice and Jamaica’s adoption of ISO/IEC 42001.
Other regional initiatives included the AI bloom in Anguilla, the growth of AI-powered learning platforms in Jamaica and that country’s participation in the International Olympiad of AI in Beijing.

Andrea Jacobs, Crown Counsel at the Ministry of Legal Affairs of Antigua and Barbuda noted her role in the UN’s Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence and participation in the Global Dialogue on AI Governance.

The Caribbean chapter plans to host a dedicated AI governance at SXSW in 2026, following up a successful staging in 2025.
The next Caribbean chapter meeting is scheduled for April 30 and will consider the topic, Framing Bias and Digital Colorism in Visual AI Systems, led by the founder of DigitalColorism.com, Christielle Mombo-Zigah.
