TATT authorises first White Space Device operator

1 Mins read

Above: Mrs. Cynthia Reddock-Downes, the Telecommunications Authority of Trinidad and Tobago’s (TATT) Chief Executive Officer (second from left), and Mr. Elvin Bain, Managing Director of Any Connect Limited (third from left, recently signed an agreement, approving the first geolocation database administrator for White Space Devices (WSDs) in Trinidad and Tobago and the Region. This agreement, stemming from TATT’s regulatory framework to accommodate WSDs in Trinidad and Tobago is of great significance, as it authorises a third-party agency to administer a database service, that will manage the dynamic assignment of available designated channels and associated operational parameters to WSDs.

WSDs are cognitive radio devices with the capability to function in white spaces. White spaces are unassigned or unutilised spectrum at a particular location or at a particular time. TATT has made the white spaces in the television band available for use by WSDs.

Any Connect Limited, the geolocation database administrator, has been authorised to facilitate operation by providing the WSDs with the relevant information through its TATT approved database system.

The geolocation database will be able to supply operational parameters such as available channels and maximum permitted power, to WSDs that are registered with TATT.

With expansive development in emerging technologies and the ever-increasing demand for spectrum, TATT takes pride in this agreement, as it is one of the many initiatives embarked upon to enable a connected society.
