Government to remove tax on all computer hardware, perhipherals on January 01

In a quiet note buried in the Manufacturing Sector  under ‘Development and Expansion Incentive,’ the Finance Minister proposes “To remove ALL duties and ALL taxes on ALL remaining computer hardware, software and peripherals that are not yet tax free.”

In September 2020, Colm Imbert partially reversed a tax regime imposed in January 2016, soon after he took office, which reintroduced taxes  on computer hardware, software and peripherals in light of continued challenges sourcing computing equipment for students needing devices to connect to online school. Smartphones, tablets and laptops were singled out in last year’s decision.

These taxes were removed  previously, in their entirety, by the UNC government in 2000 under Basdeo Panday.
