Minister Le Hunte at CANTO2019

A few days before, T&T Minister of Public Utilities, Robert Le Hunte disclosed at the recent CANTO Conference and Trade Exhibition at the Hyatt Regency Trinidad, that the Telecommunications Services of Trinidad and Tobago (TSTT) has partnered with Huawei to deploy 5G technologies before the end of 2019.

Minister Le Hunte’s statement was followed by Surinamese Telecommunications Company, Telesur, announcing its plan to deliver 5G technology with Huawei to its customers by October 2019.

This bold move by these entities shows the Region’s willingness to collaborate with ICT companies like Huawei to harness the full power and potential of digital technologies that empower citizens and create Smart Nations. These intentional and proactive strategies enable countries to bridge the digital gaps that improve their competitiveness and promote economic growth.

Telesur’s CEO Mike Antonius forecasted that through its partnership with Huawei and on-time delivery of 5G technology, it would bring greater value to Telesur’s customers and an increased return on investment. It is expected that wider coverage and better service will lead to an expected increase in the number of devices.

According to Mr. Antonius, the deployment of this technology will power many initiatives in business and local government. Some of these include E-pay Solutions on E-pay platforms, safety projects which involve the use of surveillance cameras in cities, and investment in projects that create solutions to address specific challenges faced by Suriname residents.

Minister Le Hunte championed Huawei’s relationship with TSTT, and stated that it was “absolutely necessary that countries have a complete paradigm shift to take advantage of the opportunities before them.”

He urged stakeholders to find ways to work together and implement solutions in the shortest time-frame possible, explaining that “countries need partnerships like this so they could position themselves at the forefront of digital transformation and remain competitive in the dynamic global economic environment.”

Le Hunte stated that with the necessary legislative changes and the migration of Government services online, through single electronic windows TTBiz Link and TTConnect, 5G technology is the next step in ensuring Trinidad and Tobago is well equipped to survive and thrive in the ever-changing digital economy.

He added that “with 5G technology powering the next generation of industry, it will translate to the expansion of business opportunities and greater economic activity through increased competitiveness and greater foreign direct investment.”

These investments in Guyana, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago are examples of Huawei’s vision to bring “digital to every person, home, and organization for a fully connected intelligent world.”
