bmobile responds to concerns about “Unlimited” plans

Questions put to bmobile regarding the public response to the Fair Use Policy as it is applied to the recently announced Unlimited plans for voice and mobile data for postpaid and prepaid customers.

What happens when the user hits the 20GB limit?

At present, bmobile will limit further access to subscribers who surpass the Fair Usage threshold. We are working towards ensuring that customers are throttled in the near future.

Why is there a limit in the Fair Use Policy (FUP)?

The Fair Usage Policy is intended to protect TSTT’s customers. We want our customers to experience the best of our 4G LTE Network. The average customer uses 1.5GB of data and 300 minutes. The thresholds stated in our FUP are therefore well above average normal usage.

The aim of the policy is to ensure that a small number of users who may seek to generate abnormally high traffic volumes do not negatively impact the service to our customers. Further, thresholds listed are in line with industry standards. For example, US providers AT&T and Verizon’s FUP for data is 22GB.

The average customer uses 1.5GB of data and 300 minutes. The thresholds stated in our FUP are therefore well above average normal usage.

What is the value proposition for customers?

For prepaid customers, we have enhanced the promotional plans , increasing the value on each iteration. We have provided savings and value in promotional plans, as follows:

  • Provided unlimited bmobile calls and text messages and/or a quantity of data

  • Supplemented the plans with unlimited local and international text messages

  • Added savings on calls to other networks, while continuing to provide unlimited bmobile calls and text messages and

  • The most recent iteration provides savings on calls to all local networks, inclusive of bmobile and also provides unlimited data and texts to local and international numbers.

Will TSTT be monitoring actual data use in order to adjust the data cap in the future?

TSTT continually reviews its services to ensure that we are in line with customers’ needs.

Pretty common in the U.S., actually. Performance and many other things are gauged, pricing is done accordingly – though the market certainly has more competition (but the infrastructure used in a locale is not; it’s owned by someone).

Average customer usage stats or not, you cannot advertise “Unlimited Data”, if there is a hidden cap in place, period! That is false advertising, just come out and say 20GB limit instead… Smh
